LG applies a new lithium battery degassing process to improve the production efficiency of aluminum foil packaging batteries -Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment

News on May 4 According to Korean media TheElec, LG Energy Solution has applied a new degassing process for lithium-ion batteries in its US plant. Unlike lithium-ion batteries in cylindrical packages, the company mainly produces sheet-shaped lithium-ion batteries packaged in aluminum foil. After the battery is manufactured, the gas inside the packaging must be vented. The previous process placed the battery cells horizontally, but the new process can place the battery upright.(Lithium - Ion Battery Equipment)

IT Home understands that the manufacture of this lithium-ion battery requires stacking and packaging the electrode materials, then welding the electrodes, putting them in an aluminum foil package, finally injecting the electrolyte and discharging the excess gas inside, and finally sealing it. This method will lead to incomplete exhaust and low yield. LGEnergySolution's new process erects the lithium-ion battery for exhaust, which reduces the volume of the device by 40% and greatly reduces the defect rate of the battery. After venting is complete, the aluminum foil skin is folded, heat-sealed, and excess trimmed to complete fabrication.

According to the official, the new process has reduced the battery production line from 45 meters to 20 meters, significantly improving production efficiency. This technology will be applied to many factories around the world, including Poland and my country.

In addition, LG also plans to increase the production capacity of the US plant to a maximum of 145GWh.
