New lithium-ion battery management system technology can determine battery's remaining value

Some foreign media reported that the newly developed battery management system technology can effectively evaluate the residual value of the stacked lithium-ion battery pack by measuring the electrochemical impedance of the battery.

The new battery management system technology uses the AC excitation method to measure the electrochemical impedance of the stacked modular lithium-ion battery, diagnose the deterioration of the battery, and evaluate the residual value of the battery based on the measurement data. The new battery technology has the following characteristics:

1. Respond to temperature changes of operating equipment through temperature calibration technology.

The electrochemical impedance of Li-ion batteries is very sensitive to temperature changes. Therefore, when measuring with a special measuring instrument in the laboratory, the battery should be placed in a constant temperature chamber to keep the temperature constant. However, during the operation of the battery module, the stable electrochemical impedance cannot be measured due to the continuous change of the ambient temperature. Therefore, Ritsumoto University and Matsushita developed a temperature correction technique that measures the temperature of lithium-ion batteries in electrochemical impedance measurements, corrects the impedance temperature change to a standard temperature, and maps it to a Cole-Cole plot. Therefore, even if the ambient temperature varies with season and time, it can be calibrated according to the standard temperature in the database according to the Cole-Cole diagram.

2. The electrochemical impedance of the multi-cell was measured by BMIC technology.

Traditional BMICs measure the voltage of lithium-ion battery packs consisting of 6 to 14 cells. In the battery management system, voltage data can be obtained from multiple series of batteries (up to 200) through multiple bmics to monitor battery status and ensure safe use. Additionally, you can assess charge and health, and calculate remaining range and time.

In addition to the traditional functions, the newly developed BMIC test chip also has a built-in AC excitation method to measure electrochemical impedance. Electrochemical impedance measurements use 15 fully parallel analog/digital converters, a pulsed AC excitation circuit from 0.1Hz to 5khz, and a complex voltage/complex current converter built into the BMIC. As a result, the BMIC chip can measure the electrochemical impedance of the battery while it is running without the need for major adjustments to the current BMS configuration in the battery.

3. The measurement accuracy of electrochemical impedance is comparable to that of standard instruments.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to assess the state by measuring Cole-Cole plots drawn with complex impedances. Ritsuokan University uses measurement software developed by BMIC and Panasonic to measure cylindrical lithium-ion batteries. The results show that the Cole-Cole diagram can be measured and plotted in the frequency range of 1Hz~5kHz with the same accuracy as standard measurement instruments used in the industry.
